StandUp Summits

StandUp Blue Springs periodically convenes Summits for citizens to identify and work together to address unmet needs in the community.  By engaging citizens, and bringing together community partners and the agency’s 300 volunteers, StandUp has become a successful mechanism to address the agency’s goal of citizen engagement by providing community enrichment initiatives.

StandUp Summits are the primary mechanism to provide an open forum for citizen input and for the agency to serve as an incubator for citizen ideas to improve the quality of life in Blue Springs.

Most issues addressed by the agency are identified through the Summit process.  Some issues, such as dental care for area children, is an ongoing need in Eastern Jackson County, so StandUp continues to address this issue by providing free dental care, dental education and supplies to more than 2,200 children each year.

Other needs identified by citizens are addressed over a period of time.  StandUp Summit #2 was the genesis for two public amenities in Blue Springs:

þ   Out of StandUp Summit #2, volunteers leveraged $30,000 in private and public support through RUFF to create an off-leash dog park in Blue Springs for pet and owner health and socialization.  The park is now operated by the City of Blue Springs with assistance from the RUFF committee.

þ   Out of StandUp Summit #2, volunteers leveraged $110,000 in state and local funding to create a Blue Springs Frisbee© disc golf course promote public health.  The park is operated by the City of Blue Springs and was developed with assistance from the Blue Springs School District, Blue Springs Rotary Club and the Kansas City Disc Golf Association.
